Dogs have been prominent in international politics this past week.

In a candid interview with the US President and First Lady, it has been revealed that Sunny Obama likes to leave deposits outside the Oval Office. It is unclear if this behaviour started after 8 November. https://www.yahoo.com/celebrity/potus-pet-peeve-sunny-dog-200012069.html

Experts are saying that a dog may have brought down the South Korean government. It seems the President asked a friend to mind her puppy, and he went off and played a round of golf, leaving the puppy alone. Apparently the puppy then opened Pandora’s box and the rest is political current affairs. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-38259068

Russian President Vladimir Putin has received a few pooch presents in the past, including Buffy, a Bulgarian Shepherd presented by Bulgaria in 2010, and Yume, an Akita presented by Japan in 2012. But political commentators are baffled by his refusal to accept a male companion for Yume, offered this past week by the Japanese Prime Minister. This proves that one should never try to give puppies as Christmas presents, even if you are a world leader. A dog is for life, not just for Christmas! http://www.reuters.com/article/us-japan-russia-dog-idUSKBN13Z03B

Be that Hot Dog!

This week’s hot dog is Benny!

img_2613Benny is a 5 year-old Maltese-Shih Tzu cross who lives with our very own Grand Human. Benny moved in with Grand Human in May. His prospects were bleak. He was on death row because his owners wanted to go on holiday. So they were giving him up and said if no-one took him they would send him to a shelter. So Grand Human stepped in and offered him a sofa.

Benny had lived outside his whole 5 years but took very quickly to a dramatic change in circumstances with tremendous grace and enthusiasm.

img_2897Benny’s favourite hobbies are carrying things around the house, eating, sleeping in boxes, sleeping on the bed, sleeping on washing, sleeping, and collecting sticks (he may or may not be building a fort … in which to take a nap).

One day, Benny found what he thought was the most amazing stick, four times as long as he is tall. He grabbed it and carried it proudly through the house, getting stuck in every doorway, until Grand Human intervened and retrieved it. It turned out it was Screech the Lorikeet’s perch. And the Lorikeet family was none too pleased!

The sleeping arrangements have got more complicated now that there are three dogs wanting to share the same bed. Auntie Simba likes to keep the big bed and Grand Human all to herself. So Benny has developed a strategy. He goes to a little bed and pretends to sleep. Then, and as soon as Simba nods off, he jumps into the big bed with Grand Human and there he stays all night. According to Benny, this never fails.

Benny, we are so happy you are part of the family!
