A Second Bite at the Cookie

Q: Dear Huw, what unreleased book, film, or TV show are you looking forward to seeing or reading most for 2017? And what is your favourite quote from a book, TV, or film and why? – Mariah, Leamington Spa, UK

A: Dear Mariah, thank you for your interesting questions. I think the unreleased book I am looking forward to must be my own. Because it will mean I have finished my Bedlington masterpiece. It is just so difficult to keep up with my writing when I have so much sleeping to do. And zoomies to run. And cookies to eat.

Speaking of cookies, that brings me to your second question. I think my favourite quote from a book, TV, or film might be from the one we watched recently for Aubrey’s Causeries, Against All Odds. And my favourite quote is when Jake Wise (James Woods) asks Sam (Tundra the Wonder Dog) one of life’s most important questions: “You want a cookie?” This simple question sums up the wonderful relationship between Jake and Sam, and between humans and dogs more generally. Does Sam want a cookie? Of course he wants a cookie. And Jake produces a cookie.

I love this quote not just because I love cookies. You see, this scene isn’t just about eating a cookie. There is so much more going on here. It is love and trust that means that Sam is able to take a cookie. Some dogs are too scared to take cookies. And that is a sad indictment on society. I was once too scared to take cookies. Now cookies are like little morsels of friendship. Now I appreciate every opportunity life’s kitchen sends my way. So, like Sam, I too am one always to say yes to a cookie.

The message is an important one. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Don’t look a cookie in the crumbs. Grab every opportunity that comes your way. And munch, munch, munch!
