Love … Truly, Madly, Really

Q: Dear Huw, I am a dog in love with a kitty. Sometimes I think I might turn myself inside out with affection for her, but I am afraid my love may go unrequited. She gives nothing away in return. I can’t even tell if she likes me. What can I do to win the heart of my kitty?
– Howard, London, UK

img_3778A: Dear Howard, love is such a complex question. It is the making and breaking of friendships, partnerships, and hardships. But one thing is for sure, sitting on your intended is probably not the most subtle nor charming way to invite her affection. I would recommend thinking about what she likes, such as liver treats, and trying to find some common ground, such as a tea towel basket. Then you can show interest in what she likes by enjoying liver treats with her in the tea towel basket. Make sure you always listen to what she has to say, don’t let your enthusiasm take over and upend the tea towel basket. With a kitty, I recommend going for the slow burn rather than the flash in the tea towel basket approach. Good luck with your courtship.

Q: Dear Huw, I have been watching a lot of movies about Santa Claus and my question is this: is Santa Claus real?
– Michael, Bristol, UK

A: Dear Michael, this is a very important question indeed. First, at the outset, may I answer your question and say yes, Santa Claus is real. But let me explain in some more detail and with due affection for the subject.

img_8684Over a hundred years before you, a little girl named Virginia asked the very same question in a letter to The Sun newspaper in New York. And I am pleased to say that Virginia was assured by Francis Pharcellus Church, an editor of the paper, that Santa Claus is indeed real. Christmas is a very special time, and I for one am delighted to enjoy the lead-up to the big day. And I love it because the lead-up is part of the magic. And it is in the magic that you can enjoy the real Christmas. I dare say you will even see Santa Claus quite a few times in the next couple of months. The one you meet may be only a friend of Santa’s in a suit, but he is there to make sure you enjoy all the love and sparkle and splendour and magic. And when I say magic I don’t mean it’s an illusion, I mean it is glorious! It’s not just the twinkling outside with all the decorations and lights and more, it is also the twinkling inside you that is so special about this time of year. One thing is for certain – we can never know everything, we only ever get half the picture at best. As they say, there’s more to everything than that which meets the eye. So, to make sense of the real we have to look at what is revealed through our dreams, our mistakes, and our achievements. And only then can we insist on what is true. Only then can we insist on what is real.

So yes, Michael, there is a Santa Claus. Thank goodness. Really.
