That's Jeffervescent!

Bumbershoots and Brollies

That’s Jeffervescent! – by Jefferson Airplane

I really love umbrellas. If you leave an umbrella anywhere then I am on it.

Which is unexpected really, because I also like getting wet. I like my paddling pool, I like to hop and hop and hop around the bathtub. And yet I like umbrellas. I guess I like to keep things interesting.

Maybe it’s because umbrella is a blanket term, and I like blankets.

Or maybe it’s because you can use an umbrella to measure things, like John Steed does in The Avengers. Or you can use an umbrella to fly, like Mary Poppins. Or you can use an umbrella to read in the dark, like the Lampbrella in Bladerunner. But I think really my love of umbrellas is more MGM musical than anything else. I do love to sing and dance … even in the rain.

Did you know London’s first umbrella shop, James Smith & Sons, opened in 1830 and it is still open today? If you’re ever in London it is an amazing shop in New Oxford Street. It is full to the ceiling with beautiful umbrellas of all sorts of shapes and colours and frills and woods … Oh the ridiculous fun I could have in there!

The umbrella? That’s Jeffervescent!
